  • Comprehensive consultation
  • Full X-rays and photographs as required
  • Detailed dental examination (teeth)
  • Detailed periodontal assessment (gums)
  • Cosmetic assessment (optional)
  • Functional assessment of jaw joint, muscles and bite
  • Oral cancer screening
  • Written report and estimate of cost of any further treatments
  • No-obligation treatment plan

Scale and Polish

Scaling involves the removal of dental plaque, calculus and stains from the tooth surfaces, so that the teeth become clean and smooth.

Your dentist will firstly use either a hand instrument or ultrasonic cleaning device to remove any existing plaque, calculus or stain from the tooth. This is then followed with a special cleaning paste to polish the tooth surfaces until they are clean and smooth.

Scale and Polish treatment is also available with the addition of Prophy Stain Remover.

Root Planing

Root Planing is a method of treating severe gum disease.

When gum disease is present, inflammation of the tissues will lead to separation of gum from the root surface, which creates a tiny space known as a periodontal pocket. It can be very difficult to keep clean and allows bacteria to accumulate. Root planing is the meticulous cleaning of root surfaces to remove dental plaque and calculus.

Procedures for Root Planing

Before carrying out treatment, your dentist will use a periodontal probe and take radiographs to firstly confirm the severity of gum disease. The dentist will also let the involved area be numbed by using anaesthesia to reduce discomfort during treatment.

Instruments called curettes or ultrasonic cleaners will be used to remove the plaque and calculus on root surface in the periodontal pocket.

If needed, the dentist may perform periodontal surgery that flips the gum, exposing the root surface. Then the dentist can clean the root surface with direct vision.

An entire course of gum disease treatment usually involves multiple visits.
